Compassionately Holding Opposites

[Ed: Wow, did this exercise – powerful!

1. Spend 2 minutes deeply connecting to your dream life. Spell out the details.

Where would you like to live? What would you be doing? How would you feel? What happens in your day? Add as much clarity as you can. When you have a real sense of it, place this entire image into your left hand and picture holding it.

2. Then spend 2 minutes deeply connecting to your life as it is today.

Spell out the details. What menial tasks do you have to do? What pressures are you feeling? What happens in your day? Make it real. Add as much clarity as you can. When you have a real sense of it, place the entire image into your right hand and hold it.

3. For the last 2 minutes feel your left and right hand at the same time.

Allow each to be vivid. Be curious about the difference. Notice if one hand wants to come closer in or be fully stretched out and away. Breathe. Perhaps they will come closer, perhaps they won’t. That doesn’t matter. The healing here lives in your willingness to allow these two aspects of life, AND the tension between, them to exist.

Life eases when you allow your opposites to exist without being cut away, belittled or denied. Opposites really do exist and are real human experiences that we all know. When we grow our tolerance of the differences, and the tensions they create, we can experience more of the fullness that Life is.
