With so many Spice varieties available, it can be difficult to know which ones to go for?

So I put together a guide of 7 Super Spices to help you on your way. And even if you don’t like super spicy foods, you can still enjoy the health benefits of organic spices by consuming these spices in pill or capsule form; which can be bought at any good health food store.

1. Cinnamon

We know it as an ingredient in or on countless foods. It’s got a bit of heat and is sweet at the same time. Plus, health studies show it can help to reduce cholesterol levels, lower blood pressure and help the body with type 2 Diabetes.

2. Turmeric

The Turmeric plant is a relative of Ginger and has been used for thousands of years in Indian Ayurvedic medicine (the science of long life) as an antiseptic and antibacterial agent to treat infection, inflammation, wound healing, poor digestion, etc. It is also a staple ingredient in Indian, Persian, Thai, and Malaysian Cuisine.

Turmeric is the business because it contains the powerful cancer-fighting polyphenol Curcumin.

3. Cayenne Pepper

I first enountered Cayenne Pepper while doing the Master Cleanse Detox and oh man is it powerful.

Cayenne Pepper contains Capsaicin, which is the active compound that makes your lips, tongue, and everything else on feel like it’s on fire. Turns out Capsaicin also has cancer cell-fighting ability.

4. Ginger

Most likely the ginger root is no stranger to your plate, bowl or cup. It’s a versatile spice that’s valued for its digestive benefits as well as anti-inflammatory effects. It’s brilliant for those prone to upset tummies.

5. Oregano

Oregano has incredibly high levels of antioxidants. One teaspoon of oregano has the same antioxidant power (ORAC rating) as two cups of red grapes! Besides containing the phytochemical Quercetin, which is known to slow cancer cell growth, Oregano is a good source of Vitamin K and Iron.

6. Cumin

Cumin is a spice that can be used to treat skin ailments like eczema and psoriasis, regulate the digestive system and it was even used by ancient Egyptians for the mummification process. Thymol, a compound found in cumin, improves digestion, and the spice’s antiseptic properties could help strengthen the immune system. In cooking, cumin’s pungent and powerful flavour makes it a common ingredient in hot dishes popular in Indian, North African and Mexican cuisine.

7. Nutmeg

Often overshadowed by similar tasting cinnamon, nutmeg deserves its place in the sun. If you have trouble sleeping or are an insomniac, a little nutmeg before bed can be a game-changer. Nutmeg works on upset tummies too and can relieve tooth pain when taken as an essential oil.

Which spices do you prefer and why?
